The PoPI Act Unpacked

The PoPI Act Unpacked

POPI is South Africa’s data privacy law.  The Act governs when and how organisations collect, use, store, delete and manage personal information. The operative provisions of the Protection of Personal Information (PoPI) Act came into force on the 1st of July 2020 and you had till 1st of July 2021 to be compliant.

Depending on the seriousness of the breach, the POPI Act makes provision for fines of up to R10 million and a jail sentence of up to 10 years. Considering the severity of these penalties, it is imperative that organisations, particularly top management, understand the requirements as they are ultimately responsible and will bear the brunt of any non-compliance.

Join Angus Bailie (Admitted Attorney and Senior Partner) for this 90 minute webinar where he will unpack and explain:

  • What is PoPI ?
  • Who does PoPi apply to?
  • What is ‘personal information’?
  • Who regulates PoPI
  • What are the rights of the person who is supplying the information?
  • What are the conditions of Lawful Processing of general information?
  • What are the responsibilities of the Information Officer?
  • What are the powers and duties of the Information Regulator?
  • How will the PoPI Act be enforced and what are the penalties for non-compliance?
  • What are the rights regarding direct marketing?
